The station had two island platforms with access via a footbridge, four platform faces, and a goods shed and coal staithes at the country end. The station was located near the "Romford Factory," which had been the original locomotive works for the Eastern Counties Railway from 1843 to 1847. The line through Romford and Gidea Park was quadrupled in 1930 to increase capacity, and additional carriage sidings were added. The station name was changed to Gidea Park & Squirrels Heath in 1913 and the "Squirrels Heath" suffix was dropped by British Rail in 1969. In 1947, an express train from London to Peterborough collided with a stopping service bound for Southend Victoria, resulting in seven deaths and 45 hospitalizations. Two of the four lines through the station were reopened within two hours, and the other two followed the next day. We are sure that you will enjoy your trip to Gatwick Airport South Terminal.
