W10 Ladbroke Grove, originally known as Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove, was opened by the Metropolitan company in 1864 as an extension to Hammersmith. It was formerly known as Notting Hill Gate, which was developed by 1900 with the addition of the Central Railway. The Hippodrome, a racecourse built by John Whyte in 1837, was intended to rival Ascot and Epsom and attract swanky punters from nearby areas. However, it was heavily criticized and faced difficulties due to the soft waterlogged clay in the area. In 1841, Whyte closed it down along with his lease, turning the site over to housing. The old racetrack is now known as Blenheim, Landsdowne, and Elgin. Portobello Road, the world famous Saturday market, runs from near Notting Hill Gate to the Eagle pub in Ladbroke Grove. The area was formerly Portobello farm, named after Puerto Bello, a town in Panama captured by Admiral Vernon in the War of Jenkins' Ear. We are sure that you will enjoy your trip to Heathrow Airport.
